Area Details THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
Our home is in Chelsea , a beautiful rural village in Quebec's Gatineau Hills, yet only 15 minutes by car to downtown Ottawa, Canada's capital. Bilingual Chelsea is the gateway to Gatineau Park , a national park teeming with lakes, forests, and outdoor recreation from biking to hang gliding, horseback riding and canoeing. A short walk from the house brings you to a secluded cove on the Gatineau River with wonderful views and deep-water swimming. Ten minutes by car and you are at Meech Lake, one of Canada's loveliest, with two fine public beaches. There are dozens of other lakes within easy driving distance.
Five minutes from the house is the hamlet of Old Chelsea, with six good restaurants, including the vegetarian Cafe Soupe'Herbe and L'Oree du Bois, which serves fine French food in a log cabin in the woods. In Old Chelsea you will also find a tiny wonderful bakery and a country store where bicyclists and tourists eat ice cream on the porch. An art gallery, a shop featuring the work of Chelsea artisans, and an elaborate new Gatineau Park visitors' centre are also in Old Chelsea.
Still in Chelsea, three minutes up the road from our home is Les Fougeres , rated one of Canada's 10 best restaurants by the top national food critic. It features creative dishes with ingredients from Canada's far north, such as caribou and Arctic char, as well as fine traditional Quebecois and French fare.
Nearby Ottawa is brimming with attractions. Among the highlights (all of these can be visited for free):
The Museum of Civilization, spectacular outside and in, of aboriginal design consisting entirely of curves, and including a fine children's museum and giant-screen Imax theatre;
the new National Art Gallery;
Parliament;
the Governor General's estate and residence (both open to the public);
ByWard Market (a combination Covent Garden and large outdoor farmer's market);
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police stables and Musical Ride equestrian show.
Ottawa has an extensive network of bicycle and jogging paths, most set beside waterways. There is a thriving arts and music scene with high quality venues and performers for all tastes. The summer features lots of outdoor music festivals from jazz to bluegrass.
50 minutes away is Omega Park, an animal reserve featuring all types of Canadian wildlife, many of whom come up to your car to be fed carrots. Children adore the place. 25 minutes from home is an elaborate water-slide park. A large modern casino with restaurants and floor shows is 10 minutes from our house.
Two hours' drive gets you to Montreal, the bilingual, sophisticated and stylish metropolis of Quebec, a unique blend of Europe and North America.
Prices in Canada generally are the lowest in the developed world, including the USA. (When comparing, please note that 1 Canadian dollar = 64 cents US or about 44 UK pence.)
