It attracts many climbers, walkers, mountain bikers, fishermen and the like. It has a superb climate and has become a rapidly growing area for producing fine quality wines. Some of the terrain is rugged with interesting landscapes unlike anywhere else in NZ. Many parts of Central Otago were used as location spots in the recent Lord of the Rings movie.
