Our home is a vacation dream house (our friends call it "Club Med Melrose") for two to four non-smoking adults. We have spent the past four years remodeling and landscaping our home. The house is a two story large log house (6,000 square feet/ 600 square meters) on a 7-acre private estate. We live on Lake Santa Fe- a large, clean lake (3 X 8 miles/ 5 X 12 km).
Our house was built in 1932 during an era when cypress trees that grow in the lake were cut and shipped from lake to lake in order to transport them to the mill. The ceilings are 15 feet/ 5 meters high with 2 tall stone fireplaces. We have fine rugs, stained and cut glass windows and doors, some antiques and unusual furniture collected from around the world.
In the living room there is a home theater and entertainment center with a 9 X 12 foot/ 3 X 4 meter screen for the tv, with 6-speaker Dolby "surround sound" system. Satellite dish, VCR, DVD and laser video disc players all input into the television. There is also a CD player and several cassette decks.
Downstairs is a large kitchen (that overlooks the lake) 15 X 30 feet/ 5 X 10 meters, with granite counters, contemporary cabinetry, 6-burner gas stove, double oven (electric), and microwave oven. Adjoining the kitchen is a wet bar with a fireplace, vaulted ceiling and bay window seating overlooking the lake. Outside the kitchen is a large deck (20 X 45 feet) with ceramic tile counter for food preparation and serving, a built-in gas barbecue grill, and a cozy table with seating for dining overlooking the lake.
The log-walled dining room comfortably seats up to 14 people under 15 foot ceilings. There is a lake porch where 6 people can dine overlooking the lake. The downstairs bedroom has a private deck with seating and double French doors going out to the lake. There is a lovely bathroom with two WC's, a very large ceramic tile shower (with 2 separate shower heads), and 2 sinks that is accessible from the lake as well as the bedroom and the hall.
There is a laundry room across the hall from the downstairs bedroom. Two home offices are also located downstairs at one end of the house. There is a small, well-equipped gymnasium with free-weights, an adjustable modular unit with a weight bench,a large mirror and tv just outside the house. The gym also overlooks the lake.
The entire upstairs is the master bedroom suite. It has 16 foot ceilings, and is an open floor plan. The granite and marble bathroom is separated from the bedroom by a glass-block wall, that is one side of our large etched-glass shower enclosure (which also has 2 shower heads.) There is a Jacuzzi tub, 2 sinks, a bidet and WC. The woman of the house will love the large, mirror-walled makeup/ dressing area, huge walk-in closet, and large deck with seating for 10 people-perfect for watching the sun rise and set, or for evening drinks or bird watching on the lake. A small kitchenette and serving area for morning coffee or afternoon champagne (with a small refrigerator, glasses, etc.) is also part of the bedroom suite.
The yard is very large and has good privacy, since we are surrounded on 3 sides by water or trees. There is a lovely native pond with a waterfall. Several decks wander out to or over the pond. There is a tall observation deck (seats 8 to 10 people) built high up in the trees overlooking the lake. There is also a small, 2- story wooden tree house built into the trees overlooking a canal off of the lake. It has a sleeper sofa with a double mattress as well as stained glass windows and a stereo.
Lake activities and "water toys" include a fast ski boat which seats 7 for skiing and cruising, and a very fast Sea-Doo personal water craft which seats 1 or 2. There is also a Bic windsurfer, and several other water accessories. Fresh water swimming is available right off of our dock. The water appears dark from the native cypress trees, but is clean with a sandy bottom. The dock has a large deck for sunbathing (30 X 30 feet) with many lounge chairs, a boat house, as well as a large covered and screened porch with hammock, dining table, refrigerator and bar counter.
Included on our property is a small home we rent to our accountant. He is single, and can instruct you about the house, the boat and the Sea-Doo, as well as the cars (a Chevrolet Blazer and BMW M-3 with an incredible stereo are available). Our assistant, Tracy, is here during the week in Larry's office. She can help make sure you are comfortable, can drive the ski boat, and tell you about the local area. We have a housekeeper, Janet, who is here 2 to 3 days a week, and this is required at $200 a week. Either Tracy or Janet can tell you how to feed our 2 Golden Retrievers and our outside cat during the week. If you are interested in an exchange- please contact us- even if you live in a city or country we didn't list- you never know!
Area Details We live in Florida's "lake country" in the Northcentral area. We live on Lake Santa Fe- a large, clean lake (3 X 8 miles/ 5 X 12 km).
We are centrally located, 30 minutes from Gainesville (where the University of Florida is), 2 hours north of Orlando and Disney World, and 1 1/2 hours from the Gulf of Mexico. The historic town of St. Augustine, the oldest city in the US, an artists' colony with great restaurants and beautiful beaches, is 1 hour away.
There are abundant natural resources in our area such as hundreds of lakes, natural springs, Paynes Prairie, and many limestone "sinkholes", forests, bicycle and walking paths.
Gainesville offers numerous good restaurants, a performing arts theater, an art museum (with an original Monet),films, concerts, dancing, and many bars. There are several good restaurants in Melrose- one is accessible by boat and has an outdoor Tiki bar, with live music on Sunday afternoons.
This part of the state is truly the most beautiful area- with a mild change of seasons, and many species of hard wood trees- quite different than South Florida. Come and see our part of the world!
Our preferred destinations are France, Italy, St.Barts, California, Colorado (skiing) and Naples, Florida.
