This part of Southern Italy was formerly named "Magna Graecia" (Great Greece) since it was populated by the Messapians, an ancient people of greek origins.
It is also reported that the apostle St.Peter on his sea way from Palestine to Rome stopped few days his sailing boat into a bay close to this location to replenish the vessel with fresh water from a spring.
In the more recent history, Apulia was a spanish dominion governed by the catholic Borbonic kingdom.
At that time, the Salentine peninsula which is located at the most extreme and exposed southern part of Italy was particularly subject to the frequent raids of turkish pirates.
In 1547, five turkish galleons dropped their anchors within the safe and sandy bay of the village nowadays known as "Torre Colimena", invading, depreding and burning all the hinterland and the inhabitants captured as slaves.
Accordingly, the spanish emperor Carlos the 5th through his government's representative in Naples ordered to build a net of castles and shore towers in all the region, to prevent new invasions.
Plenty pf these towers are still standing, one of them "Torre Colimena" giving its name to this fishermen small village.
Also the word "Colimena" shows its greek origin, since the dialect nowadays spoken by the local population is often full either of greek, either of spanish originated words.
Our house stands few steps from the old tower in the proximity of a rock called Chelona (from the greek "Achelon") since its shape is reminding a turtle.
At the earth level, the apartment has a wide open space with kitchen side in ethnic style, spleeping room, bathroom,and front and back independent courtyards enabling parking of cars inside.
Underground, there are two further rooms.
For those who prefer an easy access to the sea, there is nearby a nice long natural sandy beach where it is still possible to see the rare and protected sea lily.
Also, for people who love diving and underwater world, at few kilometers you can find the protected marine park of Porto Cesareo. Travel Details Village is isolated but easy reachable for those who dispose of own car.
Otherwise if coming by air,sea or train, the suggestion is to get down at Brindisi where regular buses depart from railstation for destination to the town of Manduria where you can change bus and catch the one directed to sea sides including Torre Colimena.
Anyway during summer bus line is always available for connecting Torre Colimena to other towns nearby.
